Riding “The Last Frontier”
Approaching the end of my summer journey, our final stop was Skagway, Alaska. We knew we had to get in one last ride before heading back home. Fortunately for us, two Trek Fuel mountain bikes were available to rent, and before I knew it, I was riding deep through the beautiful valley of Skagway.
Being at a higher altitude was something I immediately noticed. It almost felt like it quieted the distracted nature of my ADHD, which was a strange but welcome feeling. While I found myself much more focused, I was also noticeably slower. Technical trails demand your full attention, and if you don't put in the effort, they can quickly overwhelm you. So I committed all of my energy and focus to the trail ahead and gradually picked up speed.
The cold, damp weather created another challenge—ice. Ice is never a friend when you're relying on traction. I had to direct all of my ADHD toward maintaining my balance and scanning the trail for the next obstacle. Every rock, root, and slippery section required complete concentration.
One trick that helps me stay focused is singing or talking to myself while I ride. It gives my mind something to occupy itself with without taking my eyes off the trail. Instead of letting distractions creep in, I can stay locked into the terrain ahead, which helps me ride more confidently and avoid unnecessary crashes.
